How to play GeoAngles

Every day at midnight UTC, GeoAngles picks a new mystery city and puts it at the centre of a ringed board. You never see its name or a photo of it, instead you see four other, well-known cities, each drawn as an arrow pointing away from the mystery city at the real angle it lies in. Direction is all you get at first and the distance clue is earned as you guess.

Distance unlocks in stages

The opening board shows direction only: every arrow sits on the same placeholder ring, so you have to reason from angles alone. After your first guess, arrow colours light up to hint at distance: lime for “very close” through deep red for “the far side of the world,” the same key the photo daily uses. After your second guess the real distance rings appear: 500, 1,500, 3,000 and 8,000 km — and every arrow snaps onto the one that matches. After your third guess, exact distances appear for everything on the board. A correct guess is the one exception: it always shows its exact distance the instant it lands.

Six guesses, every guess becomes a clue

You have six attempts to name the mystery city. Every guess you make joins the board as a numbered arrow of its own, sharpening right alongside the opening clues, so the circle of possibilities shrinks with every try. On your final guess the mystery marker starts to race.

A new puzzle every day

The daily puzzle rotates at midnight UTC, so everyone sees the same mystery city at the same time. Build a streak, then share your result with the City Angles you played.

Building a streak

Solve the puzzle before you run out of guesses and your GeoAngles streak grows by one. Miss a day or fail to guess correctly and it resets to zero. The game tracks your current streak and your longest streak, stored locally in your browser rather than on a server — so it stays private to this device, and clearing site data or playing in a private window will wipe it.

Tips for new players

• Two reference cities pointing in roughly opposite directions narrow the mystery city onto a line between them — look for that pair first.
• An arrow's angle matters more than its length on the opening board: every arrow starts on the same placeholder ring, so don't read distance into it yet.
• Once colours light up after your first guess, use them to rule out entire hemispheres before refining direction further.
• Your own guesses become arrows too — use where they land relative to the reference cities to correct your next guess.
• When the real distance rings appear, look for the reference city whose ring is closest to the mystery city's — that direction is your best next guess.
