What Makes Medium Mode a bit difficult than Easy Mode

Medium difficulty draws from cities that appear regularly in international news and travel coverage like Cairo, Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Jakarta, Nairobi, Warsaw, and Bogotá. These are places most people have heard of, but could you pick the skyline out of a lineup?

The photos are fairer than Hard Mode, but not obvious:

• Real landmarks, less famous angles. You might see the right city’s monument, just not the shot that ends up on postcards.
• Recognizable cities, unfamiliar neighborhoods. A well-known city photographed away from its tourist core.
• Enough context to reason it out. Climate, architecture, signage, and geography are all readable if you look carefully.

If you know your world geography but aren’t a specialist, Medium is your proving ground.

Tips for Cracking Medium Puzzles

• Identify the continent first. Vegetation, building materials, and signage style usually settle this within seconds.
• Match the architecture era. Soviet-era blocks, colonial-era facades, and modernist glass towers each point to distinct regions.
• Look at the street furniture. Bus stop designs, traffic lights, and road markings are often surprisingly country-specific.
• Narrow by climate. A palm-lined boulevard and a snow-dusted square are on different sides of the planet.

Who Medium Mode Is For

Medium is for curious generalists. These are people who follow world news, enjoy travel, and can name most capitals but aren’t training for a geography Olympiad. It rewards observation over memorization. A good first step up from Easy, a good warmup before Hard.

How many cities are in Medium Mode? Medium draws from more than 900 cities worldwide, weighted toward capitals and major cities that appear regularly in global media.

Can I play Medium without finishing Easy first? Yes, all three difficulties are open from the start. Pick whatever matches your skill level.

How is “close” calculated? Flat-map (equirectangular) distance between your guessed city and the target, measured on a flat rectangular world map, so direction arrows match how the cities are laid out on screen rather than over-the-pole great-circle routes. The proximity color runs from green (under 50 km) to red (over 7,500 km).
