Cities in this Quiz
About this quiz
Guess the city from a single photo. 5 attempts. No regions revealed. No first-letter hints. After each guess we return the flat-map distance to the target, a direction arrow, and a proximity color. That’s it. Everything else is on you.
What Makes Hard Mode Hard
Hard difficulty pulls from a pool of lesser-known cities that rarely surface in international news like Asunción, Vaduz, Bishkek, Thimphu, Port Vila, Nuuk, and Malabo. You’ll need genuine world geography knowledge, not just headline recognition.
Even well-known cities get a tougher treatment in Hard Mode:
- Misleading angles. A skyline shot that hides the iconic landmark. A street view that could be five different cities.
- Lesser-known monuments. Instead of the Eiffel Tower or Red Square, you might see a regional museum, a metro entrance, or a side-street church.
- Subtle visual clues. License plates, signage scripts, architectural styles, vegetation, road markings, electrical infrastructure: a trained eye can read a lot from a single frame.
If you score 100% on Hard, you’ve earned it.
Tips for Cracking Hard Puzzles
- Read the script first. Cyrillic, Devanagari, Arabic, Khmer, Thai, or Georgian. Check the alphabets as they narrow the world down fast.
- Check the climate signals. Tropical vegetation rules out half the planet. Snow rules out the other half.
- Use your first guess to triangulate. Don’t guess your hunch. Guess a city that splits the globe usefully (Reykjavík, Nairobi, and Wellington are good probes).
- Trust the arrow. The direction arrow is your most precise clue. Combine two arrows from different guesses and you’ve nearly solved it.
Who Hard Mode Is For
This level is built for geography enthusiasts, quiz veterans, travel obsessives, and anyone who already finds Easy and Medium too forgiving. If you can name every African capital without thinking, or you spot a city from its tram livery, this is your difficulty.
FAQ
How many cities are in Hard Mode? The Hard Mode pool draws from more than 900 cities of the world, with a bias toward less-covered ones.
Can I play Hard Mode without finishing Easy and Medium first? Yes, all three difficulties are open from the start. Pick whatever matches your skill.
How is “close” calculated? Flat-map (equirectangular) distance between your guessed city and the target, measured on a flat rectangular world map, so direction arrows match how the cities are laid out on screen rather than over-the-pole great-circle routes. The proximity color is a continuous scale from green (under 50 km) to red (over 7,500 km).
How can I know the answers? Answers drop at the end when the dust settles. The “Cities in this Quiz” section shows every city along with its thumbnail, a Wikipedia link, Google Maps, and links to the landmarks in each photo. Fair warning: it might sting a little.
